Cultural Shift is the sole full-length album by the British techno group Trip (Andy Hunter and Martin King), released in Europe on Engage in 1998, marketed and distributed by Alliance Music. Also released by N*Soul Music in the US the following year, distributed by both Diamante Music Group and Navarre Corporation. It is considered the first drum’n’bass album to be released on a Christian label.
At last we have a serious sanctified drum’n’bass album in the UK! It’s been a long time coming but people, it’s now arrived! Trip are Andy Hunter (also of Hydro) and Martin King and are based in the musically exciting town of Bristol (home of award winners Roni Size and Portishead). The album has quite a dreamy start to it. with the appropriately tilled «Dreams». Then the nice deep, boomy bass sounds, characteristics of this musical genre, creep in followed by the sharp, crisp and fluent drum rhythms providing the momentum required to get even the laziest head bobbing up and down. There is a sophisticated, yet laid back feel to this mostly instrumental project. When vocals do appear, they stand out with their relative simplicity and calmness compared to the phat bass lines and speed of light drum loops. «Passion» shows an influence from Goldie with its frenetic rhythms, time stretched vocals and percussive effects, while «Energy» has a more jazzy feel with a worshipful vocal performance. The variety in the vibe, though not in tempo, continues with «Drilling» which swings along rather smoothly and includes the familiar voice of dba’s Shaz Sparks. The bpm drops below 160 only for the last track, «Cream Tea», which is a nice way to chill out at the end of a very enjoyable sonic experience. [Andy Cooper, Cross Rhythms, February 1998]
