Prom Praise: Majesty

Description

Prom Praise: Majesty is a live album by Britains All Souls Orchestra with Choir and various guest vocalists, released on Integrity Music in 2014. (“Includes CD+DVD with 3 Hours of Content”) Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England. Featuring All Souls Orchestra led by Caron Cavalier and Prom Praise Massed Choir conducted by Noël Tredinnick, as well as guest artists Graham Kendrick, Martin Smith, Paul Baloche, Helen-Jane Howells, Rebecca Eves (violin), and trumpets Giles Fowler, Raul D’Oliveira, and Peter Desmond. Produced by Michael Lawson (for Langham Arts) and Les Moir (for Integrity Music).

MAJESTY – Prom Praise 2014 is the recording of the 2014 Prom Praise concert at the Royal Albert Hall – featuring All Souls Orchestra, Massed Choir, soprano Helen-Jane Howells, violin soloist Rebecca Eves, and special guest artists Graham Kendrick, Martin Smith and Paul Baloche.

Featuring great moments with orchestra and choir, including «Festive Overture» by Shostakovich, «Short Festival Te Deum» by Holst, «Steal Away» (also featuring Helen-Jane Howells) and «Remembrances» from John Williams ‘Schindler’s List’ (also featuring Rebecca Eves).

Worship leaders joined choir and orchestra in leading a 5000 strong audience in many inspiring songs, including «I will sing the wondrous story», «Praise is Rising», «Open the eyes of my heart, Lord» (with Paul Baloche), «Majesty» (by Martin Smith), «Ten Thousand Reasons» (featuring all soloists) and new songs by Graham Kendrick and the other guest leaders – «He is Risen» and «Praise my Soul».

I must confess that never having warmed to the whole Proms business, I’ve done my best to avoid the ‘Prom Praise’ albums of the past. It was Martin Smith‘s unexpected appearance at this year’s Royal Albert Hall event which led me to swallow my reservations and I have to admit that on the whole ‘Majesty’ was an enjoyable musical experience. Noel Tredinnick and his trusty orchestra have got better as the years have gone on and although they’ll never be top-of-the-tree symphonians their accompaniments to the rock voice of Martin Smith work every bit as well as they do with mezzo soprano Helen-Jane Howells. One of my favourite hymns «I Will Sing The Wondrous Story» is given a flamboyant reading while «10,000 Reasons» featuring Paul Baloche, Martin Smith, Graham Kendrick and Helen-Jane Howells is as heart-stirring as the original Redman recording. Probably my absolute favourite here though is «Remembrances» featuring the delightful violin of Rebecca Eves. I can’t say I enjoyed «Bugler’s Holiday» even though I’d admit that Raul D’Oliveira and friends play it impeccably while the accompanying DVD had a rather wince-inducing rendition of «When The Saints Go Marching In». But on the whole, the folk at All Souls have released an album which will appeal to a pretty broad based audience. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, March 2015]
