Description
Columcille – an instrumental album – is the solo debut album by the British saxophonist/flutist David Fitzgerald of Iona fame, released on ICC in 1995. The album was recorded and mixed between December 1994 and March 1995 at ICC Studios in Eastbourne, England; with Nigel Palmer and David Fitzgerald producing. Arranged by Tim Oliver and David Fitzgerald.
Featuring Dave Fitzgerald on soprano and tenor saxophones, flutes, as well as assorted woodwind, backed by Tim Oliver on keyboards (as well as keyboard and sequencer programming), Dave Clifton on assorted guitars, and Martin Neil on percussion. Also featuring vocals by Tim Brown (countertenor on tracks 1 and 8), Claire Tomlin (soprano on tracks 7 and 10), and Vanessa Freeman (track 6). (Pre-programming assistance by Julian Wiggins.)
David Fitzgerald, ex-founder member of Iona, takes us on a musical journey from the 6th to 20th centuries in his own unmistakable style. A mixture of Celtic influence through to the excellent soul number «Were You There» sung by the very talented Vanessa Freeman. An album which will maybe take a few plays to be fully appreciated but once you let yourself drift off with the fabulous flute and sensational sax then I defy you to take it out of your deck! The opening gambit, «Veni Creator» – a hymn to the Holy Spirit – is sung in its original Latin by H M Queens own counter-tenor Tim Brown and the closing offering is the most beautiful rendition of «When I Survey» which really does send a shiver down your spine. A great collection. To get the best out of this one you need a quiet room (if you can find one), close your eyes and allow yourself to be wooed by this musical virtuoso on a journey through time.
