Description
Great Big Universe is the sophomore album by the American pop-rock band Satellite Soul, released on Ardent Music in 1999, marketed and distributed in the US by ForeFront Records, through Chordant Distribution Group. The album was recorded and mixed by Paul Ebersold and Matt Martone at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; with Ebersold and Tim Suttle producing.
“Driven by acoustic guitar and classic rhythm, Satellite Soul shares warm stories at every turn, mixing pianos, harmonicas, & dulcimers into a roots-rock foundation with consistent innovation. Recommended for fans of Caedmon’s Call, Rich Mullins, and Jennifer Knapp.” [Hype Sticker]
A few changes have been a foot for US rockers Satellite Soul. Having stripped down to a three piece, gone are the retro sounds of yore making way for a more acoustic dynamic to the band’s sound. ‘Great Big Universe’ boasts some wonderfully honest compositions concerned with life and faith, penned from a humble and contrite heart. The album is faultlessly produced by the team of Paul Ebersold and Tim Suttle, where certain unique compositional ideas have been successfully realised. Apart from the opening title cut however, I’m of the opinion that the majority of the material herein suffers from an over familiarity within the context of both the album and the genre it represents. Big Universe’ is a welcome dose of honest musical expression that is both encouraging and uplifting. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, October 1999]
