Icons

Description

Icons is an album by the American techno artist Prophetica (a.k.a. Eric Dunne), released on N*Soul Music in 2001, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was recorded and mixed by Adam Houghton at Cerebral Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee; with Eric Dunne producing. All tracks written by Eric Dunne.

A strong collection of instrumentals embracing the genres of trance, techno, trip hop and jungle. Nothing particularly innovative, but the tried and tested formulas of large beats, dreamy pads, electronic riffs, cyclic chord progressions are put to good effect. Prophetica had tracks on the last two Eclectica compilations from N-Soul. This is their first solo album, with nine new tunes, and will appeal to fans of Orbital and Virus. The sounds are very convincing and the programming is skilled. It is hard to fault this music, but my only criticism would be that a few of these tunes sound a bit out of date (techno is a bit of a tired genre these days). Each track is well packaged with plenty of dynamic changes, breaks, filters and variety of textures. Though melody is scarce, it is not missed. The opening track «Silas» and the closing track «Zion» are good examples of instrumental trance, while «What Is Hope?» with its repeated vocal sample requires the attention of DJs and home listeners alike.
