Description
Re:Source 2001, sub-titled 12 Pop/Dance Versions of Today’s Popular Worship Songs, is a British multi-artist project released on Movation in 2000, marketed and distributed in Europe by Alliance Music. A first installment was released the previous year, simply entitled Re:source 2000.
The follow up to the Re:source 2000 album has arrived and, once again, it has the well known sound that we have come to expect from Movation. The Re:source idea, for those who don’t know, is to provide pop/dance versions of today’s popular worship songs. Vocal talents come from Laura Grace, Doug Walker, Lynsey Berry, Sarah Erasmas and Deronda Lewis. Musically, Matt Wanstall has contributed the most here, with background work from Porter and Pennells, and has managed to pull together several styles into the 12 tracks. The album kicks off with «Nothing In This World» sung over a deep, orchestral trance beat and is easily my favourite track. «Thank You For The Blood» has a two step feel and is followed by a laid back version of «When Words Are Not Enough». «Joy» gives us a jazzy vibe, «Hungry (Falling On My Knees)» goes trip hop and the classic, «Over The Mountains» has new life breathed into it with a groovy bass rhythm. The album moves on with an airy soundscape that is «Thank You For The Cross», which is followed by a slightly cheesy house version of «My Jesus, My Saviour (Shout To The Lord)». Pure has been put expertly to a two step beat and is followed by a drum and bass version of «We Want To See Jesus Lifted High», which is definitely worth hearing. The album finishes with two trip hop tracks: «King Of This Heart» and «Send Revival». Compared to Resource 2000, this production is slightly disappointing – for two reasons. 1) There are four tracks fewer, and 2) if you have a yearning to have a backing CD (eg, for your youth group’s worship) you have to order it separately from Alliance; as, for some strange reason, they have not included it with this CD. But let’s not quibble. Overall, this album is a great contribution to breaking out of typical worship moulds. [David Bain, Cross Rhythms, December 2000]
