Description

Collaborations is the third album by the American hip-hop artist KJ-52 (a.k.a. Jonah Sorrentino), released on Uprok in 2002, a hip-hop division of BEC Recordings. The album was recorded at Crib Studios (specifically in Todd’s bathroom) in Nashville, Tennessee. Produced by Todd Collins for Beatmart Productions.

KJ is by no means a stranger to the hip-hop scene, having rubbed shoulders with big names on both sides of the divide. This is his first album with Uprok, settling on a “creatively subversive East Coast style” throughout the proceedings. The collaboration of producers include the likes of Blake Knight with artists such as John Reuben and Pigeon John to name but a few. KJ’s approach is a breath of the fresh stuff, being light hearted yet serious at the same time, as seen in the querky «Dance With Me», featuring Pigeon, and the hilarious «Nursery Rhymes» that tells the true story of what became of various nursery rhyme characters. Sometimes vocally compared to Eminem, KJ bites back (with great humility), on ‘Dear Slim’ (hope that track hits home someday). A great album, though a tad patchy in places, however there are plenty of head nodders and thought provokers to keep things interesting and fresh. [T A Sutherland, Cross Rhythms, November 2002]
