Watermark

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American pop duo Watermark (husband and wife Nathan & Christy Nockels) was released on Rocketown Records in 1998, manufactured and distributed by Word Music Group. The album was recorded by Jim Dineen and JB at Deer Valley Studio in Franklin and at Whistler’s Music Studio and Screaming Baby in Nashville, Tennessee; with Monroe Jones and Nathan Nockels producing. Mixed by Dineen at Whistler’s Music Studio. All songs written by Nathan & Christy Nockels except track 6 co-written with Eric Hill.

Featuring Nathan & Christy Nockels on lead and background vocals, Jeff Roach and Nathan Nockels on piano and keyboards, Rivers Rutherford on acoustic guitar, George Cocchini on guitar, Mark Hill on bass, and Greg Herrington, Steve Brewster, Scott Williamson, and Jeff Roach on drums and percussion.

The latest signing to Michael W Smith‘s burgeoning roster are a husband and wife, Nathan and Christy Nockels, aka Watermark, and a talented pair they are too. They have songwriting credits on all 11 songs on this one, Nathan provides keyboards in a band containing some well-known names on the Nashville session scene, and Christy warbles her way through the material with all the aplomb of a veteran. One of the attractions for me is that nearly every song is addressed directly to God in a straightforward no-nonsense fashion, so you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to tell where these guys come from. Stylistically Watermark owes much to established duos such as Out Of The Grey, but comparisons are unproductive, because this is more praise and worship orientated, something that Scott and Christine haven’t done since Charlie Peacock‘s “Coram Deo” projects in 1992/3. I’ve got a feeling that we might be hearing more of Mr and Mrs Nockels. [Trevor Kirk, Cross Rhythms, December 1998]
