Description
New Recording is a solo album by the British singer and songwriter Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue fame, independently released on Internazionale Records in 1997. The album was recorded March-June 1997 by Paul McGeechan at Secret Music Studios in Glasgow, Scotland; with McGeechan and Ricky Ross producing. (Additional production – and bass – on track 6 by Brian Docherty.) Mixed by Paul McGeechan. All songs written by Ricky Ross except track 5 co-written with wife Lorraine McIntosh.
Vocals and instrumentation by Ricky Ross except track 3 featuring vocals by Lorraine McIntosh. Cello and string arrangements provided by Stephen Adam. Programming and “noises” by producer Paul McGeechan.
Readers should spot a familiar pattern by now; new album completely different from its predecessor, and so it is with ‘New Recordings’. This time round Ricky accompanies himself on a lone guitar or solo piano with former Love And Money bass player Paul McGeechan adding loops and sound effects. Ex-Big Dish bass man Brian Docherty plays an infectious bass riff which lights up “I Love You”. Lorraine McIntosh also guests on “The Further North You Go” and Ricky re-records an old Deacon Blue B-side “The Undeveloped Heart”! A late night acoustic record which closes with “Ash Wednesday” posing a string of questions about faith and belief. This is probably the kind of intimate album on a small label Ricky had wanted to make after Deacon Blue split. some stuff is a bit obscure in hindsight though. [Dougie Adam, Cross Rhythms, July 2005]
