Shine Jesus Shine is a praise & worship album by the British singer and songwriter Graham Kendrick, released on Songs Of Fellowship in 1988, a Kingsway Music label, manufactured and distributed by Kingsway Publications Ltd. The album was recorded and mixed by Neil Costello at ICC Studios in Eastbourne, England (and as well at Sedgehill School and King’s Church in Catford); and was produced by Les Moir with Costello co-producing. Brass, woodwind and string arrangements by Christopher Norton. All songs written by Graham Kendrick.
Vocals by Graham Kendrick, Mal Pope, John Perry, Douggie Williams, Julie Moon, Sue Weight, and Pat Knight. Core choir and (live) congregational singing from Ichthus Christian Fellowship.
Featuring Graham Kendrick on vocals and acoustic guitar backed by a session band consisting of Dave Bainbridge and Chris Norton on keyboards, Andy Billups on acoustic guitar, Neil Costello on electric guitar, Tim Harries on bass, Phil Crabbe on drums, and Martin Neil on percussion. As well featuring Nick Thompson and Martin Hurrell on trumpet, Lindsay Shilling and Martin Frammingham on trombone, Peter Francomb on French Horn, and Andrew Maries on accordion and oboe, and David Fitzgerald on on flute and saxophone. Dave Liggins, Katy Allen, Lucy Bennell, and Gemma Hayes provide ocarina.
The anniversary edition of this classic album marks not only more than a decade of marching for Jesus, but its remarkable journey from the streets of the UK, to a ten million strong worldwide phenomenon, poised to greet the 2000th year of Jesus Christ with street praise and prayer processions on an unprecedented scale.
By far the best-selling UK praise and worship album of its era, an unusual number of the songs it launched have become standards, not least the title track. Its simplicity and power undiminished by the years this, the original recording, has come to represent a piece of history in the making. ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ was the best selling UK praise and worship album of its era. This 1988 set may not quite be the “classic” proclaimed on the sleeve, but this mid price re-issue is a fitting tribute to the March For Jesus movement that has grown from a humble trudge around Soho to a 10 million worldwide phenomenon. Pride of place goes to «Shine Jesus Shine» and the simple congregational version here inspired a generation of worshippers. The first section, ‘Songs Of Worship And Prayer’ gives us eight songs and several are indeed of superlative quality though their rendition is decidedly subdued. The ‘Songs For The Streets’ section with its rather forced atmosphere is less successful and one or two of the songs haven’t worn well. But still, this album is a timely reminder of the depth of talent of a great worship songwriter. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, June 1997]
