Description
Love Will Find a Way is an album by the British singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Maldwyn Pope (Mal Pope) of Trade Secret fame, independently released on Pope’s own label MPH in 1990. The album was recorded by Peter King at the Kings Palace in Swansea, Wales; with Mal Pope producing.
Welsh singer/song-writer/producer Maldwyn has put together a tight band for this album. Fretless bass, sax and flute add texture to a very live-sounding combo, a feel notoriously hard to obtain in the studio. The songs follow a simple formula with the necessary ambiguity that seems to be required for what is now time-honoured crossover style. The hook lines should explain what I mean with “we can take it higher”, “we can put this world together again”, “you make me feel like a child again” and the title song «Love Will Find A Way». They chug along with pumping bass lines similar to Alan Tarney’s songs. Drums are low in the mix compared to current standards, which makes a change. Maldwyn’s voice is Chris de Burgh-ish with elements of soul. Not philosophical songwriting, but competent and interesting. [Paul Poulton, Cross Rhythms, September 1990]
