A Different Kind of Light / Closer to You is a two-sided 33â…“ RPM 7-inch split single by the American alternative rock bands The Seventy Sevens and Undercover, released in 1983 on Exit Records/A&S Records (the bands’ respective labels), distributed by Word (catalogue number EA-100EP). The track on Side A was taken from the 77’s debut album Ping Pong Over the Abyss released on Exit Records in 1982, while the track on the flip-side was taken from Undercover’s full-length album God Rules! released on A&S Records in 1983.

The Seventy Sevens album was recorded January – April 1982 by Larry Hirsch with Daryl Zachman at The Warehouse Ministries’ Sangre Studios in Sacramento, California; with Steven Soles of The Alpha Band fame producing. Mixed by Hirsch at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, California. “A Different Kind of Light” was written by Steve Scott. The Undercover album was recorded by Dan Willard at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana, California; with Willard and band member Joe Taylor producing. “Closer to You” was written by Joe Taylor.
