Taken by Surprise is an album by the Australian soft-rock trio Cascade, released in Australia on Rhema Records in 1979. The album was recorded by Paul Rich at Unison Productions in Rozelle, Australia; with Steve Wyatt producing and arranging. Mixed by Rich and Wyatt at Unison Productions. All songs written by band member Malcolm Barnett.
Cascade features Malcolm Barnett on lead vocals as well as acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars, John Uebel on vocals as well as acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars (and Moog synthesizer on track A5), and Peter (Sid) Sinclair on flute and blues harp (and harmony vocals on tracks A4 and B3). Cascade is backed by a session band consisting of producer Steve Wyatt on Fender Rhodes electric piano, Moog synthesizer, and Solina String Ensemble (a.k.a. ARP String Ensemble), Mark Punch on acoustic and electric guitars, Alan Freeman on bass, Nick Lister on drums, and Doug Gallacher on percussion. Flute provided by Doug Foskett.
Cascade creates some of the most refreshing sounds I’ve ever heard to come out of Australia. Australia or anywhere else for that matter. The trio consists of John Uebel, Malcolm Barnett and Peter (Sid) Sinclair. They have a vibrant authentic cutting-edge folkrock and acoustic pop style, infectious upbeat melodies led by penetrating close-knit harmonies. Very skillful musicianship, typically in an acoustic setting, but also some rock tracks with electric guitar (like the excellent «Living In A Fallen World»). Decorated with tons of fancy flute work, bright and zesty with bongo percussion on «Danielle», jazzing it up on «Born A Man», echoing the melody with synthesizer for an unusual effect on «Sometimes I Feel I Could Say». A couple great harmonica-backed folk-styled numbers in «Emmanuel» and the energetic «The Room». Closes with a beautiful acoustic ballad «A Taste Of Heaven (For Keith Gowan)».
