Finer Than Gold is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Barry McGuire, released on Sparrow Records in 1981. Also released on MCA Records. The album was recorded and mixed by Ralph Osborn at Kendun Recorders in Burbank, California; with Georgian Banov of Silverwind fame and Tony Salerno of the Agape Force fame producing, assisted by Glenn Wilkinson of Candle fame. Arranged by Larry Muhoberac.
Featuring a session band consisting of Larry Muhoberac on keyboards, Billy Walker on guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Paul Leim on drums, with Paulinho Da Costa on percussion. Backing vocals provided by Andra Willis, Carolyn Willis, Diana Lee, Gene Morford, and Jim Haaf.
Except for a few good songs, Barry’s last few albums have been mired in mediocrity. Unfortunately, the same is true of ‘Finer Than Gold’, which was produced by Agape Force honcho Tony Salerno. The songs, mostly written by Barry’s cohabitants at the Agape Force, are based on good ideas but fail to leave the listener much to chew on.
The song that probably works best is «Lonely Love», a touching duet about a broken relationship. Though the album is somewhat lighter musically and more consistent than his past efforts, don’t take the title literally. [John W. Styll, CCM (What’s New), June 1981]
