Of Old It Was Recorded is the debut album by the American singer and songwriter Wesley Randolph Eader, self-released in October 2012, manufactured by Deeper Well Gospel Collective. The album was produced and recorded by Eric Earley. All songs written by Wesley Randolph Eader.
Featuring Wesley Randolph Eader (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, banjo) with Eric Earley (backing vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, percussion, bass), Ben Michel (banjo), Laura Kucera (violin, cello), and Heather Penzel (backing vocals).
Musically, I would describe ‘Of Old It Was Recorded’ as a collection of bluegrass-tinged Appalachian folk hymns. The instrumentation is simple: acoustic guitar accompanied by the occasional violin, cello, harmonica, and banjo. The wonderful thing about this album is how authentically and comfortably it falls into the tradition of old time gospel and folk music. Every song sounds like something coming out of a tent revival somewhere in Appalachia. The lyrics are profound yet simple. They could easily be mistaken for words from a page torn out of a hymnal. What is amazing is how fully formed a debut album this is. It’s a difficult to task to write a few good songs, let alone a consistently good album. Wesley Randolph Eader however does the latter with ease. Although it is musically a very enjoyable album, what makes Of Old It was Recorded truly stand out is the obvious depth of Eader’s devotion to Jesus. One can palpably feel the love of Christ through this music. Give this wonderful album a listen. For fans of The Tallest Man on Earth, Old Crow Medicine Show, Gillian Welch, and Josh Garrels.
