On the Way Up

Description

On the Way Up is the seventh studio album by the American singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Leon Patillo, released on Ocean Records in 1989.

After an extended recording hiatus Leon Patillo returns to the music scene with an 11-song album that is an interesting compilation of worship, ballads, and pop-oriented R&B. Although this reviewer found the bulk of his effort lacking in the groove department, on cut, «Cold Turkey» sounds the most up to date. Its hip-hop, rap feel is a familiar late ’80s sound, and Patillo has presented it with his own unique interpretation. Side two offers «Hosanna», and «More of You», two songs with strong melodies.

All of the songs have been written, arranged, produced and performed by Patillo, bit unfortunately, this lack of outside input creates somewhat of a “stock” feel. The heavy reliance on drum programming makes what should be great songs sound stale and mechanical. Patillo would greatly benefit in getting some fresh perspective in the production and playing aspects of the recording. His “one-man” show is more easily pulled off in a concert situation, but does not translate as well onto tape. [Stephanie Bennett, CCM, January 1990]
