The One and Only

Description

The One and Only is the fourth album by the American indierock band Plankeye, released on BEC Recordings in 1997, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Gene Eugene of Adam Again fame, and band member Luis Gracia, at The Green Room in Huntington Beach and at Front Page Recording in Burbank, California; with additional production by Andrew D. Prickett of The Prayer Chain fame. Additional recording by Prickett, Wayne Everett, and Nirpal “Bob” Tiwana.

The following year lead singer Scott Silletta left to form the short-lived pop-punk band Fanmail and drummer Adam Ferry left to become a youth pastor.

Part of what makes Plankeye so refreshing is that it doesn’t easily fit into any one category of the increasingly splintered rock market. Refusing to tiredly copy a certain style of music, the band continues to create loud, noisy, energetic and fun power-pop music dressed up in modern rock clothes.

‘The One and Only’, the fourth album from Plankeye, shows that this band just keeps getting better and better. The songs waste no time before laying down the catchy melodies, grooving bass lines, and bouncy, uplifting guitar work.

«Someday» gets things cranking with the observation that “Someday you’ll understand/ Let’s just hope that day comes fast.” With a punchy rhythm and a wailing harmonica solo, the song is unstoppable. Throughout the album, the message is simple, up-front and direct. Whether singing to God (“If you just keep opening doors/ I promise that I’ll keep testing the locks”) or wryly noting how “I guess it takes this long to realize/ Just how much I don’t know,” Plankeye sounds wise beyond its years. Lead singer Scott Silletta sounds more confident than ever as he exhorts the listener, “Don’t fight the things that you’ve been taught all your life.” While standout cuts include «Staged Fight» and «Someday», there probably isn’t a song on here that couldn’t be a big radio hit.

Easily one of the most solid rock records out right now, ‘The One and Only’ solidifies Plakeye’s place as a band that is leading Christian music into its future. [Michael Ciani, CCM, December 1997]
