They’ll Know We are Christians by Our Love (sub-titled Featuring Mass for 67th Street, Messa Bossa Nova, and eight new songs) is an album featuring songs written by the American singer, songwriter, and reverend Father Peter Scholtes performed by Chicago’s Saint Brendan’s Choir, released on F.E.L. in 1968. The album was recorded by James E. Schaefer and Larry Root at Boulevard Studios in Chicago.
Father Scholtes really didn’t mean to become a composer; it just happened. Father was given charge of the young people of Saint Brendan’s Church on Chicago’s South Side several years ago. His effort to aid these young people in finding God included experiments in music for worship – and THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS and the MISSA BOSSA NOVA were born.
Now the Young People’s Parish of Saint Brendan’s is a flourishing community, structured strictly according to its members’ need. Father Scholtes directs a group of over 40 voices and instrumentalists which participates in the Sunday services and gives concerts throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. They are heard in this recording.
The instruments used by the Saint Brendan’s Choir include congo drums, maracas, bongos, temple blocks, and guitars. Most of the songs are harmonized spontaneously by the group. Sometimes the songs they sing are composed by members of the group: on this album two of these have been included, sung by their composers.
This is a record of music that is truly indigenous to the life and worship of a remarkable group of young Christians. It is a tribute to them and to Father Scholtes – but more, to the living Christianity which sustains them. [Liner notes printed on the back of the LP sleeve]
