Description

Lead Me On – b/w “Sure Enough” – is a two-sided 7-inch vinyl single by the American singer and songwriter Amy Grant, released on A&M Records in 1988 (catalogue number AM-1218). Both tracks were taken from Grant’s full-length album Lead Me On released on A&M Records the same year (manufactured and distributed by both Myrrh/Word and A&M Records), recorded by Jeff Balding at various studios in Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee; with Brown Bannister producing. Mixed by Balding, Marc DeSisto, Shelly Yakus, John Potoker, and Steve McMillan at A&M Studios and Lion Share Recording Studio in Los Angeles, California, and at Emerald Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. The titled track was written by Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, and Wayne Kirkpatrick, with the track on the flip-side written by Mike Brignardello, Shane Keister, and Kirkpatrick.

The title track, actually the second single from the Lead Me On album, was released both as a 7-inch vinyl single, 45 RPM 12-inch vinyl single, cassette single, as well as CD maxi-single.

Like almost all the other singles from the album, it topped the Christian radio chart. “Lead Me On” became the only single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 96 and remaining on the chart for two weeks. In the United Kingdom, the single fared slightly better, peaking at No. 89, her first single to register on the charts there.

The song was later covered by Bethany Dillon on her self-titled debut album released on Sparrow Records in 2004.

Michael W. Smith wrote the music for “Lead Me On” and I was captivated by it the first time he played it to me. I wrote the lyric with Wayne Kirkpatrick. I have always loved singing this song because of its powerful reminder of the capacity of man’s inhumanity to man unless we allow God’s compassion and mercy to lead us all.
