Description
The self-titled album by the American folk-pop group Soul Concern (“A Campus Life experience from YfC“) was released on FourMost in 1971 (??). The album was produced by Sherman Williams.
Soul Concern features Gail Jones (soprano vocals), Karen Ford (alto vocals), Phyllis Jones (alto vocals), Brian Widbin (tenor vocals), Dave Swanson (baritone vocals), Frank Guzzo (baritone vocals), and Lindy Hearne (bass vocals).
Smooth soulful sunshine pop and ballads from the groovy “now sounds era”. Soul Concern are seven Campus Life folks (four guys, three girls; four white, three black) with happy layered male/female harmonies and (like their group name suggests) a hint of soul. A soft electric sound, heavy on the organ, occasionally livened up by the bass and drums. Mostly covers like «Easy To Be Hard» (a touch of wah-wah here), «Reach Out And Touch», «I Wish I Knew How It Feels To Be Free», «Mighty Clouds Of Joy» and «Bridge Over Troubled Water». The spiritual angle comes through member Lindy Hearne’s originals, namely «Sunshine Day», «And I Believed» and «Come To Jesus». Not for everyone, although there seems to be a growing audience for these things Hearne would record some later solo albums. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
