Description
Diamonds in the Rough is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Lindy Hearne, released on Ariel Records in 1980, “a ministry of Campus Life Publishing” distributed by Zondervan Corporation. The album was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee; with Dana Key, Eddie DeGarmo, and Joe Hardy producing for Mint Productions. All songs written or co-written by Lindy Hearne.
Featuring Lindy Hearne on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by a session band consisting of Eddie DeGarmo on keyboards, Joe Hardy on acoustic and electric guitars, Dana Key on electric guitar, and John Hampton on drums. As well featuring Andrew Love on saxophone and Carl Marsh on piano and recorder (on tracks B4 and A5 respectively). Background vocals provided by Lynda Hearne, Jack Holder, Susanne Jerome, and Dan Key.
A slightly bigger production that pushes a little more toward the rock direction of DeGarmo & Key (both of whom are again participants here) while also displaying some of the soft rock and ballads style of Bob Bennett. Saxophone brings a “CCM” feel to a couple songs. The soothing recorder-backed acoustic track «Hey Brother Coyote» is especially lovely. See also Soul Concern. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
An album of good Memphis country rock, strong solos with light backup, Diamonds in the Rough displays Hearne’s considerable composing and vocal talents. Words written mostly by Mike Phillips (also John McClung, Ronny Hutchins, and Hearne) demonstrate that intelligent, sensitive lyrics can be written about the daily Christian experience. Subject matter and moods vary greatly and entertain. The LP has potential for wide appeal. Plans to redesign cover are well-advised.
