Description
Pass It On is the third album by the American hip-hop artist Mike E, released on Big Doggie Records in 1995. The album was produced by Mike E and Jet Penix.
Mike-E starts out back when with Commissioned, gets the itch to rap, makes two albums chock full of his rhymes and guitar work for Reunion, wins Doves for both, but reaches his creative peak when he gets on an indie label created by Green Bay Packer Reggie White. Go figure.
Mikey’s producer, Jet Penix, remains from the Reunion days, but there sounds like a rejuvenation of creative juice informs ‘Pass It On’. Mr. E still busts the couplets with a flow that plays the middle between Hammer’s pop flavor and Heavy D’s R&B smoothness.
The guitar playing isn’t so prominent as in the Reunion days. In exchange, there’s the gospel sauce that spices «Take a Ride», a bit more turntable scratching than before, and an increased versatility in rhyme styles and humor.
He reminisces with one of his young’uns on what being a kid was like «Back in the Day» and offers cautionary tales for those who have already traveled the wrong path in «Gotta Go» and «Better Now Than Later». The Mother Goose allusions of «Spread the Word» recall Arrested Development’s lighthearted moments. «Make a Move» is spoken word depth in a Michael Peace/Gil Scott-heron mode, and if you need Mike’s wailing guitar, check its instrumental remix.
One might still wish for mo’ bass in a Mike-E cut, but ‘Pass it On’ still has funk and truthful goodness to spare. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, May 1995]
