Material Sanctuary

Description

Material Sanctuary is the sophomore album by the Swedish doom metal band Veni Domine, released in Sweden on Thunderload Records in 1994, marketed and distributed in the UK and Europe by Alliance Music. The album was produced and recorded by Ragne and Styrbjörn Wahlquist at Thunderload Studios in Stockholm, Sweden; with the band co-producing.

Veni Domine is Fredrik Ohlsson on lead vocals, Torbjörn Weinesjö on lead guitar, Magnus Thorman on bass, and Thomas Weinesjö on drums.

I first came into contact with Veni Domine at Greenbelt ’92 (George Russell in CR21 described this gig as “Where the presence of God has been unmistakeable.” I agree) and became an instant fan. It’s been nearly three years since their debut album ‘Fall, Babylon, Fall‘ but it has been worth the wait. They have been described as a mixture of Queensryche and Black Sabbath and while that element is still in evidence, this is a much heavier and more progressive album than ‘Babylon’. The lyrics are well written, the title track is about man’s desire for material blessing, only to find it cannot satisfy him. The opening track «The Meeting» is about a man looking back at his life and finds God. The best song is one called «Ritual Of The Sinner» which after listening to it, I gave God thanks for saving me and it gave me a greater desire to get out there and witness! The other interesting thing is that this album is on a secular label. A very heavy, haunting album with a very heavy message that will inspire you. [Paul Moore, Cross Rhythms, June 1995]
