The Way Home

Description

The Way Home is the tenth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Wayne Watson, released on Word Records in 1998, a division of Word Entertainment, manufactured and distributed Word Entertainment. The album was produced by Michael Omartian.

Wayne Watson has been inspiring audiences with his poignant musical stories for almost two decades. Before contemporary Christian music exploded in all its multi-faceted glory, Watson was about the business of mixing distinctive, high-quality music with compelling lyrics that stirred the heart. Over the years, he has garnered 19 No. 1 radio singles, numerous Grammy and Dove nominations and awards, and a whole lot of respect from industry insiders and fans alike.

With that kind of track record, it should come as no surprise that his fourteenth album, ‘The Way Home’, offers more of what has earned him that reputation. Over the years, Watson’s songs have chronicled the joys and struggles of millions. His musical stories and anthems have also served at times as a plumb line for a generation that is easily distracted and swayed from sincere and pure devotion to Christ. His new project seems to continue on that well-proven track. For instance, «For Such a Time as This» has the same kind of theme as his No. 1 hits «It’s Time» and «Field of Souls». Likewise, «Come Home», a song reflecting on grown children, picks up chronologically where «Watercolour Ponies», «Teenager in the House» and «Class of ’95» left off.

The fact that Michael Omartian produced all and co-wrote many of these songs explains the prominent place the piano has taken on this recording. The opening tune, «There Goes Sundown», has a warm, smooth Don Henley-esque feel to it, and «Come Home» is driven by an exquisite piano accompaniment. Nonetheless, this album is not starkly different from Watson’s previous material. There are a few edgier moments («Here in this Town» and «Perception»), some middle-of-the-road tunes («Long Way Home» and «Wouldn’t that Be Somethin’?») and several very nice ballads. But rather than trying to categorize ‘The Way Home’ or peg its musical style, it seems safer to say that in every way it is classic Wayne Watson. [Laura Harris, CCM, May 1998]
