Description
Thrifty Mr. Kickstar is the sophomore – as well as the first nationally distributed – album by the American pop/rock outfit Dryve, released on Sarabellum Records in January 1997, a division of 5 Minute Walk Records. Also released for the general market through Warner Music Group. The album was recorded at The Green Room in Huntington Beach, California; with the band and Masaki Liu of Dime Store Prophets fame producing. Mixed by Masaki at his One Way Studios in Concord, California.
The album showcases the band’s musical dynamics and diversity, profound lyrics, and well crafted songwriting talents. The sound has been compared to the obvious being The Wallflowers, Tom Petty, and R.E.M. but it also had the occasional bite of a Led Zeppelin or Zoo-T.V. era U2. In 1994 the band independently released a CD entitled Hum.
The single “Nervous” charted nationally on college radio as well as CCM charts and AAA stations. Thrifty Mr. Kickstar also won the “Best Adult Alternative” album category in the 1997 San Diego music awards. The highlight of Dryve’s touring life was touring with Sixpence None the Richer in April ’97 and The Call in October ’97.
Now I’m not suggesting that the CCM audience is second rate, or that they don’t know their music, but I might be suggesting that some record companies really waste some great artists by only giving them access to that limited crowd. Dryve from America’s west coast is such an example. Not a bunch of pretty boys, not worried by trends or fashion, Dryve deliver some of the very best rock music from across the pond. This six-piece outfit have a knack for great radio tunes with a timeless feel. Second track «Nervous» is one of those songs you’ll be able to slap in the CD player in 10 years and it will still be cool. The music is basically guitar bass/drum and Hammond (no need for Phil Madeira here, Dave Pratschner’s B3 licks rule!) and might just give a nod to some of the Brit pop thing. But no copycats here, the only band that sound like Dryve is Dryve! Once again, only a USA release so it might cost you a few quid more for this from some of our import mates, but if intelligent, well played grown up rock music is your cup o’coffee, then skip that Big Mac on Saturday and invest in some serious musical nourishment! Full marks. [Sammy Horner, Cross Rhythms, October 1997]
