Keep the Banner Flying High (Live Worship)

Description

Keep the Banner Flying High, sub-titled Live Worship, is a live praise & worship album by the British singer and songwriter Graham Kendrick, released on Integrity Music in May 2018. The live album contains new-to-the-public songs as well as four songs pre-released over the last few months as singles/videos. The album was recorded by Neil Costello and Peter Lozinski at Rose Hill School Theatre in Tunbridge Wells, England; with Kevan Frost producing. Mixed by Frost.

What a magnificent banner to rally to, the banner of Christ! Raised up over millennia through the patriarchs, prophets and apostles, it proclaims the true story of the world and the unfurling of the meaning of history. Handed down to us through generations of those who also prayed; ‘Your kingdom come’, we receive it with awe because countless lives were laid down to keep it flying high. Like them we make God our refuge in troubled times and look to the love of the cross to measure our worth. As they did, we seek to obey the voice that asks; ‘whom shall I send and who will go for us?’, to play our part and complete our work wholeheartedly. We in turn raise up following generations and on the basis of divine promise go up against impossible odds and seize our inheritance. When things don’t work out as expected we trust the hands that made the heavens and which forever bear the wounds of Calvary. We press forward together until the glory of God covers the earth. Let’s keep the banner flying high!
– Graham Kendrick

With a batch of songs in his back catalogue which all and sundry acknowledge as foundation stones of the modern worship movement which now grips the worldwide Church the veteran singer/songwriter could have been forgiven for taking it easy. But as it turns out this, Graham’s first new set of recordings for four years and more, is in the running, in my opinion, for being his best ever album and there are three songs here which, if they ever come to the attention the mass church-going public, will bless and empower. Although recorded live at the Rose Hill School Theatre in Tunbridge Wells (or was it just the videos which were filmed there?), Graham is in top form and producer Kevan Frost with a set of hand-picked musicians give these songs sympathetic and occasionally inspired arrangements. Pride of place for me has to go to «Praise Him Moon And Stars», a Celtic-tinged song which could have been drawn from the repertoire of Rend Collective, while «My Worth Is Not In What I Own (At The Cross)», written with Keith and Kristyn Getty, deserves to be in new hymnals (if such things are still being published). The verse “As summer flowers we fade and die/ Fame, youth and beauty hurry by/ But life eternal calls to us/ At the cross” is up there with his “Hands that flung stars into space…” classic lines from «The Servant King». There are a couple of nice surprises when Jake Isaac and Mairi Neeves guest on a couple of vocals and from beginning to end this is a triumph where finely-honed songwriting and top rate musicianship come together.
