Description
Stone Bright Solid is a four-track CD-EP by the American singer and songwriter Angela Josephine, independently released in 2012. The EP was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Keith Kinnear for Backseat Productions in Ann Arbor, Michigan; with Chris Bathgate producing.
The packaging of this four-track EP is the most original I have seen since the days of Delirious? releases such as ‘Live And In The Can’ and ‘Kingdom Of Comfort’. It comes in a tin box with five alternative magnetic photos and a choice of 160 magnetic words. In true postmodern style, this CD can be what you want it to be – not so much reader-response as listener-response. You can upload your creations to Instagram or a Facebook app. This approach to the packaging comes from Angela Josephine’s multiple artistic talents: not only is she a musician, she is a painter, poet and photographer. The EP itself comes after two previous full-length recordings. It is acoustic, but not in the more trad-folk style of a Kate Rusby or the adult-pop-folk leanings of a Heidi Talbot. Nor is it Americana. This reviewer puts it closer to the acoustic-but-not-really-folk of Laura Marling, but with the breadth of instrumentation (trumpet, hammered dulcimer and other suspects) that can only suggest a modern female Nick Drake. In keeping with this musical bed, the lyrics are reflective rather than declamatory. It is music for Christian introverts to rally around – quietly, of course. If you have not heard her music before, it will leave you wanting to investigate the rest of her catalogue. [David Faulkner, Cross Rhythms, February 2013]
