I Have Big Plans for the World is a six-track CD-EP by the American singer and songwriter Beki Hemingway, independently released in September 2012.
It took Cross Rhythms three years to catch up with Beki’s wonderful 2002 album Words For Loss For Words‘ and now an even longer delay has occurred! The six-song ‘I Have Big Plans For The World’ was released in 2012. Such delays won’t discourage discerning music lovers from investigating one of the most underrated singer/songwriters on the scene. Co-produced by her husband, guitar and keys player and former member of the Vigilantes Of Love, Randy Kerkman, this is hugely enjoyable power pop/rock with one track «Finnieston» reverting to an acoustic, electric piano and cello setting. For the most part though, it’s biting guitars and punchy drumming which encase Beki’s expressive voice which sometimes sounds like a cross between Sheryl Crow and Aimee Mann. Beki’s lyrics explore subjects like a housewife who sacrifices her dreams in order to raise a family – with the telling refrain of «Last Wish» going “the last kid off the bed/ I’m tired of crawling, tired of falling”; a poignant reflection on the appeal of Finnieston, an area of Glasgow; and on «Lay It Down» expressing a desire to disengage from the hurly-burly of the world. Cross Rhythms recently caught up with Beki at a house concert in the Midlands and in August she and Randy will be playing a host of similar events in the US.
