Hope Tonight

Description

Hope Tonight is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Melanie Penn, independently released in 2014. The album was produced by Ben Shive.

With so many independent releases coming out these days and only a percentage of them ever finding their way to the Cross Rhythms offices, it can often take a year or more before we get our hands on albums that other critics tell us are “must haves.” New York-based singer/songwriter Melanie released her debut album ‘Wake Up Love’ in 2010. That was excellent and this is even better. If you like the pure-toned voice and songwriting skill of Ellie Holcomb, ‘Hope Tonight’ will quickly convince you that Melanie is every bit her equal. With deft production from Ben Shive, this is beautiful and haunting music with the title track being a particular gem. Melanie wrote the song when she felt in a low place but the song in fact is fused with hope (“There must be more than I see with my naked eye/ Some underlying design that makes things right”). One reviewer wrote, “This is a rare opportunity to be swept away by the soaring melodies and relatable themes – a musical magic carpet ride.” A classic album that needs investigation.
