Glory Bound

Description

Glory Bound, sub-titled Psalms set to folk music, is the debut album by the American “Jesuit folk singer” Paul Quinlan, released on American Record Society in 1965, distributed by World Library Of Sacred Music.

1965 would seem to be the banner year for Catholic folkies found wielding guitars hot on the heels of Vatican II. Others may have been more popular and gotten more songs into the youth hymnals, but Paul Quinlan is one of the few to sound like a true folk-singer at heart. Glory Bound contains fifteen of his “folk psalms” (he’s actually written one for each of the 150 Psalms!), drawing inspiration from Spanish music, Negro spirituals, mountain music (you’ll even hear yodeling on one song), backing his soft expressive tenor solely with classical guitar, passionately played. It’s one of the best examples of the style, each song refreshingly alive in its presentation. Certainly a rarity among the typically dull sing-and-strum offerings of the era. Paul was a Jesuit seminarian at the time of this recording. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
