Living in the Vertical

Description

Living in the Vertical is the debut album by the American pop singer Reneé Garcia, released on Reunion Records in 1987. The album was recorded by Steve Boyce Buckley and Laurence Burridge at The Justice Room in Somerset, England; with Chris Eaton of Mark Williamson Band fame producing. Mixed by Glenn Tommey at Crescent Studios in Bath, England; except tracks A4, B1, and B4 mixed by Raine Shine.

Jump back! Renee Garcia, former back-up vocalist with David Meece, and member of These Three, that terrific trio that souled out the last two Amy Grant tours, has made her mark in the dance/pop genre with ‘Living in the Vertical’. Like other female artists making music for body and soul (Kim Boyce, Angie Lewis), this one takes her share of cues from Mrs. Sean Penn. Listen to «Imagination» and compare it to «White Heat» from ‘True Blue’ – see what I mean?

But what separates the girls from the girls here are the songs, most of which come from the pen of Chris Eaton, who also produced. Eaton has adapted his ’70s-based songwriting skills well to ’80s arrangements and production values, making this a highly listenable and very danceable album. More importantly, a number of tunes are also memorable – listen to «Deepest Love», the first single, and «I Want to Be Used for You».

Last but certainly not least, Renee’s voice is not only impressive from the standpoint of her dynamic range, but her sensitivity to matrial, and a smooth edge which wears well and longer than some of her counterparts. [Thom Granger, CCM, December 1987]
