Halo

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American arena-rock band Halo was released on Pakaderm Records in 1990, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was recorded and mixed by Mike Mierau, John Elefante, and Dino Elefante at Pakaderm Studios in Los Alamitos, California; with John and Dino Elefante producing.

“Pakaderm Power Pop… in the style of Foreigner, Journey and Kansas” is how the label’s press release describes the music of Halo. I can hardly think of a better description. It’s superbly, almost over-produced, more than adequately performed and full of catchy and memorable hooks. Unfortunately, ‘Halo’ embodies one of the negative aspects of the Elefantes’ “assembly line” approach to record making – it could be by any one of a half-dozen artists they have produced.

In fairness to the band, I should give equal weight to its writing and playing, and not just the sterile production. Halo began a friendship with Bob Hartman of Petra over five years ago, which resulted in Hartman producing its demo, and ultimately, bringing it to Pakaderm. The Alabama-based Halo has been together for nearly a decade, and its tight arrangements and vocal prowess reflect that long association. The members say they don’t want to be a “crossover” group, and that is truly refreshing. The lyrics, mostly written by vocalists/bassist Scott Springer, are aimed squarely at a young Christian constituency. “Jesus music is what we are playin’…” and “The Rock of our salvation is Jesus Christ our Lord” may not be the most original lyrics, but they certainly leave no doubts as to Halo’s beliefs.

Other outstanding tracks include «Lord of All», «Skyrocket» (written by the Elefantes, its catchy chorus and the fact it doesn’t mention God by name ironically make it a perfect crossover tune), the moving ballad «Language Barrier» and «Time to Run». For the most part, Halo’s sincerity and quality musicianship rise above the anonymity of the production to make it a band to watch. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, August 1990]
