Living in the Comfort Zone is the 12th studio album by the American singer and songwriter Scott Wesley Brown, released on Word Record in 1990. The album was produced by Tom Wanca and Scott Wesley Brown.
Good news for those of us who remember SWB’s ‘SWB‘ album from 1980 – Brown’s versatile, powerful voice is back in solid pop channel. Not that his Greg Nelson-produced later efforts weren’t pleasing; it’s just nice to hear him using those first class pipes in a fresh, loosened adult contemporary style that takes advantage of his natural flair for a good groove. Not to worry, insp-fans; Scott isn’t going to alienate you with screaming guitars (although the rhythm tracks are plenty punchy). It’s just that the globe-trotting boy has picked up a snappy variety of sounds from his ventures into so many different cultures.
This isn’t Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’, mind you, but you will hear international flavors in this effort, Brown’s second on Word. SWB’s “musicianary” efforts are well-known by now, which leaves you to wonder how he ever found time to record this, what with his full-time commitment to the mission field.
That commitment is the thrust of this project, lyrically and musically. He makes no bones about it; Brown’s purpose is to shake up a sleeping American church to the fact that there’s a big world out there. Ever wonder how his traveling that big world affetc’s Scott’s family? The poignancy of that struggle is expressed in «When the Whole World Knows», a heart-tugger penned in response to his daughter’s wish for Daddy to stay home.
There are challenges galore for the American Christian – the liner notes alone are worth ten bucks just for the Scriptures and quotes from well-know evangelical thinkers. In case you’re tired of being challenged, shaken, or otherwise un-coddled, listen to «This is the Church» and «The Lord Who Loves Us All» for a touching reminder that Jesus is the same in every nation, no matter how believers pronounce His name.
We Americans could stand to be reminded of that again and again; and Scott Wesley Brown delivers the message with his characteristic grace and conviction. [Bernie Sheahan, CCM, August 1990]
