Description
Cry Freedom is the sophomore album by the Scottish melodic rock band Triumph, released on Pulse Records in 1989, an imprint of John Pantry’s independent UK label Ears & Eyes. The album was produced by Norman Barratt, Ted Blakeway, and the band.
Triumph features Jim Ritchie on lead vocals, bass, and percussion; Gordon Cowan on keyboards and backing vocals; Murray McEwan on guitars; and both George McConnachie and Andy Tooth on drums and percussion. Also featuring guest musicians Norman Barratt on guitar (track B1) and backing vocals (track B3), Richard Bowker on additional piano and keyboards (track B3), and Nia on duet and backing vocals (track B3).
This Triumph is a Christian alternative rock band, not the Canadian prog rock/metal band most are familiar with. Bands like The Call, The Alarm, and U2 are probably closer references style-wise, although they do lean a bit towards the pop rock side more than the alt rock side of those bands. This tape is a fairly slick production and a well played/produced full length album. The tape cover is even one of those that wrap all the way around the back instead of just half-way. Haven’t seen one of those in the demo collection in a while! The tape mentions that this is also available on CD. Also of note – this band was part of the Ears & Eyes Productions group that Royal Rendezvous was involved with, and they even put out a tape in the “7Trax” series as well. Final note – Norman Barratt produced this, as well as playing guitar on «Cry Freedom» and singing backing vocals on «Take My Life». [Christian Tape Underground, January 26, 2019]
