Description
Something Good is Bound to Happen is the debut album by the American singer and songwriter Bruce Carroll, released on The New Canaan Records in 1987, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Kent Madison with Mickey Hiter and Michael G. Smith producing.
Bruce Carroll is backed by a band featuring Michael G. Smith and Dennis Burnside on keyboards, Jimmy English and Don Potter on guitars, and a rhythm section consisting of Glen Warf on bass and John Gardner on drums and percussion, with Don Jackson sitting in on saxophone. Background vocals provided by Ted Hewitt, Mickey Hiter, and Ricky Skaggs.
I never liked country music. I could never tell what country it was from. Then the powers-that-be decided to confuse me with something they call “modern country-pop”. Just throw in some synths, Top 40-styled arrangements and then please the masses.
As usual, the Christian music industry is catching up with its secular counterparts. Last year’s release of Terri Gibbs’ Christian album was a big step forward. Bruce Carroll is a strong second step.
‘Something…’, Carroll’s first album, features his smooth brand of country stylings spiced with pop sensibilities. Nashville pros like Don Potter, Ricky Skaggs and Michael G. Smith contribute to a sound cut in the Lee Greenwood mold.
Carroll’s songs are filled with encouragement for today’s believer. The title track reminds us that when things are rough, it’s the devil working overtime because good things are around the corner. «Let Go Let God» is a catchy musical treatment of that common cliché.
If you either like this style of music or you want to flirt with country without the twang, try this album. [Mike Atkinson, CCM, April 1988]
