Description
The self-titled and sophomore album by the American gospel and R&B/soul duo Bebe & Cece Winans was released on both Sparrow Records and Capitol Records in 1987. The album was recorded and mixed by Jeff Balding with Keith Thomas producing.
Talent certainly does run in families. Take, for instance, the Winans family from Detroit. Not only do they offer us a group of their sons, The Winans, but they give us two additional members of their family, BeBe & CeCe Winans. So talented is this duo that they are signed not only to Sparrow Records, but directly to Capitol Records as well.
This debut gospel album is full of melodic urban-contemporary music. Many are silky smooth ballads, but there are a couple of up-tempo gentle funk numbers to keep things spicy and moving along. Their sound is fresh and obviously geared for the same audience that artists like Philip Bailey and Deniece Williams reach. This is not to say that they are rip-offs. There is a sense of originality with this pair of Winans.
The best songs on the album are «I.O.U. Me», «No Hiding Place», and «Still in Love with You». The album is one that will gently take you over. It may not knock you out on the first listen, but upon a couple of playings, it will work its way into your psyche.
This album should meet with enthusiastic radio acceptance as well as the acceptance of the public. It is a good record and a fine debut, but I think these two have much more to offer. [Devlin Donaldson, CCM, July 1987]
