Out of the Darkness is the fourth album by the American hard rock/metal band Bloodgood, released on Intense Records in 1989, an imprint of the Frontline Music Group, releasing FMG’s industrial/metal output. The album was recorded by Terry B. Shelton at Black Coat Productions and was produced by Shelton for Black Coat Productions with band members Michael Bloodgood and Les Carlsen co-producing. Mixed by Shelton, Bloodgood and Carlsen.
Bloodgood fans who appreciate the band’s aggressive sound on their first two albums should love ‘Out of the Darkness’. It’s a return to the speedy and crunchy sound that originally attracted their large audience.
One of the album’s high points is «Hey You!», which comes roaring out of the speakers to begin side two with a loud ‘n’ sassy guitar riff reminiscent of early Van Halen. It’s a fun hard rock-blues number with a shouting/chanting chorus of “Hey! Hey, you!”
«Let My People Go», starting off with a guitar melody similar to the «While My Guitar Gently Weeps» riff (the Bloodgood boys are confessing Beatles fans), romps along at a pop metal pace.
«America» finds vocalist Les Carlsen pouting about the fall of America and the need for the Spirit of God to fall on us.
«It’s Alright» is kind of boring and lacks innovation, but it’s the only dud on this nine-song release.
«Top of the Mountain» finds Bloodgood in top form, incorporating sweeping changes of mood and tempo much like «Alone in Suicide» from Detonation. Studio guitarist Paul Jackson adds some melodic guitar leads that are packed with emotion and feelings, effectively bringing home the message of intimacy in prayer.
«Changing Me» is a good rock ballad with a nice, ebbing bass line by Michael Bloodgood. Drummer Kevin Whisler lays down some solid drumming here.
Most of the song lyrics include scripture references, making for an in-depth Bible study for those willing to investigate. [Doug Van Pelt, CCM, September 1989]
