Description
Present Reality is the sixth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Michael Card, released on Sparrow Records in 1988. The album was digitally recorded, mixed and mastered and was produced by Norbert Putnam.
While many people either believe outright there is no God, or live as though there isn’t – which is the same thing – Michael Card sings, “Let me know You in the Now,” probing the mystery of God’s present reality.
Great melodies abound. «The Word» sounds almost like an early American hymn tune. (No, Sparrow will not be publishing a “shape note edition”.) The lyrics are like riddles: “I must confess/ We lose you in our busy-ness” (or is that business? Hmm.). Other songs examine the walk of faith («That’s What Faith Must Be»), the Christian’s new life in Christ («In Stillness and Simplicity»), and Christ’s sacramental and spiritual presence in our lives. («Flesh of His Flesh», «Meditation»).
According to lore, Card wrote these songs in a log cabin out in Tennessee somewhere. The production has an appropriately rough-hewn quality; austere piano and strings add dimension to Card’s plaintive vocals.
