Terry Talbot sings Stories of Jesus

Description

Sings Stories of Jesus is the sixth solo album by the American singer and songwriter Terry Talbot of Mason Proffit and the Talbot Brothers fame, released on Sparrow Records in 1984. The album was recorded by Joe Bellamy and Ron Capone at Easter Song Studios in Lindale, Texas; and at Westwind Studio in Westlake Village, California; with Terry Talbot producing. Mixed by Capone at Westwind Studio.

Featuring Terry Talbot on acoustic guitar and Denny Bouchard on synthesizer (with Rhett Lawrence providing Fairlight and Rhodes Chroma programming), as well as the rhythm section of Koinonia – Abraham Laboriel and Bill Maxwell on bass and drums respectively. Backing vocals provided by Matthew Ward and Nelly Greisen of 2nd Chapter of Acts fame, as well as Wendy Hofheimer of Wendy & Mary.

The simplicity of this album’s title bespeaks its concept and message. ‘Sings the Stories of Jesus’ makes a forthright statement of conviction, describing who Jesus is, what He has done, and what He continues to do in the lives of those who seek Him. It’s the sound of one man pouring forth drama, emotion, and praise in telling the story of his Savior.

‘Sings the Stories of Jesus’ floats between events in the life of Christ, not chronologically but rhythmically – from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Sea of Galilee, to the resurrection of Lazarus and, naturally, to Christ’s death and resurrection.

Interjected throughout the series of nine folksy ballads is a persistent, tugging appeal to the listener to accept Jesus’ power and to identify with those who have lived and walked with Christ. The album attempts to bridge the 2,000-year gap which so often prevents contemporary man from identifying with Jesus.

Most successful in achieving this goal are songs like «I Saw Him», «Come Forth», and «Heal Me», each containing powerful first-person accounts of encounters with the Lord. «I Saw Him» shows the reaction by a Roman centurion to the ministry of Christ. «Come Forth» gives parallel monologues of Jesus’ friend Lazarus and the contemporary believer, both rescued from death. «Heal Me» speaks from the perspective of the hemorrhaging woman who touched Jesus on a crowded road.

None of the songs takes liberties with the historical/factual data contained in the Scriptures. Rather, they fancifully expand the accounts with human feelings.

The soft, soothing guitar strains joined with Talbot’s mellow voice make each story come alive. And this is good. For it is in the world of personal interaction, not in the world of art, where we truly encounter Christ. [Karen Cushing, CCM, September 1984]
