Images is the third album by the American singer Kathy Troccoli, released on Reunion Records in 1986, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was produced by Dann Huff and Phil Naish.
On a first listen, ‘Images’ hit like a great party record. Sequencers stutter and shake; explosive, violent drums syncopate dangerously off the beat; and untamed guitar solos writhe and snake through dense jungles of reverberation.
Beneath this extroverted, urban R&B, however, run lyrics of a darker nature. They read like a Harlequin romance run off the tracks: scenes of anguish, loneliness, loss, grief, misery, alienation… If this is at all autobiographical, Kathy Troccoli must have had one hellish year. Somebody should stop draggin’ this woman’s heart around!
Troccoli’s passionate vocal phrases run headlong over driving, repetitive song structures as she sings, “Runnin’ from my past/ Headed for no future/ Blamed it on a love/ That left me with an anger – killing me.” By the last chorus, an unnamed Someone has taught her forgiveness. She’s «Ready and Willing» to love again, but still most of the songs dwell on the pain of lost love. «Love Stays» and «No Time for Love» present two sides of a relationship broken apart by selfishness. «If Only» is dedicated to the memory of Troccoli’s father who died of cancer when she was sixteen. Her heart-wrenching performance here is no act. The raw emotions are born of personal grief.
The “images” of the album’s title have a lot to do with self-image, and KT offers advice and encouragement with a sort of bruised courage. ‘Images’ is honest, emotional, and convincing art, and most listeners will feel the twinge of truth in its portrayal of one individual’s struggles to keep hope alive amid the debris of human relationships.
