Description
How the Night-Time Sings is the sophomore full-length album by the American singer, songwriter, and guitarist Brooks Williams, independently released on Williams’ own label Red Guitar Blue Music in 1991, distributed by SILO.
Featuring folk originals and instrumentals, and covers; Brooks Williams on acoustic and bottleneck guitars and vocals, Jennifer Shader on upright bass, as well as Kristin Kunhardt on backing vocals.
Releasing his debut EP Red Guitar Plays Blue which was issued on his own label back in 1989. Hot on the heels of this initial release, Brooks Williams would go on to independently issue two albums North From Statesboro and How the Night-Time Sings before signing for Green Linnet Records for much of his ’90s output. Keen to take charge of his own musical destiny, 2004 saw Williams return to his own Red Guitar Blue Music label and subsequent albums have almost exclusively been released this way.
Brooks is a newcomer to the Christian marketplace, although his religious convictions have been an important part of his folk-based music throughout his career. He bears a passing resemblance to James Taylor, another southern-born artist who was raised up north, but whose roots continually surface in his writing. Williams weaves incredibly detailed stories of his family («Jubilee», «Hard Love») his travels («The Monte Vista») and his faith («Dusty Road», «Streets of Heaven», «When I Reach»). «Los Padres» and «Look What the Cat Dragged In» are instrumentals which showcase Williams’ deft guitar technique, in both finger-picking and bottle-neck styles. If you’re a fan of acoustic music a la Bruce Cockburn or Mark Heard, you’ll probably enjoy Williams. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, December 1991]
