Various Artists – Acoustic Colours

Description

Acoustic Colours, sub-titled 15 Original British Acoustic Classics, is an multi-artist compilation album released on Kingsway Music in 1994.

This is an intriguing compilation of acoustic-orientated tracks from the Kingsway archive. Interestingly there are three sets of artists who are really very much like each other – Malcolm and Alwyn, Phil and John, Stewart and Kyle – who all clearly owe much to Simon and Garfunkel. Oldies will enjoy the track by Parchment from 1964. I did not see the need to have two Bryn Haworth tracks. This could have easily have been filled with a track from Nuffsed or Sammy Horner. (I preferred the second Haworth track out of the two.) Apart from this it is worth buying though I felt it would be better at mid-price as I believe roots enthusiasts will already have many of the tracks. It’s very laid back and relaxing. I hope that Kingsway will re-release some of the early albums on CD. Malcolm and Alwyn, Stewart and Kyle and of course Parchment – come on Mr Pac. A so-so sampler of acoustic roots that could and should have been better. [Edward Scott, Cross Rhythms, December 1994]
